The tragedy continues in the review ordered by the government of Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust. Patient safety concerns forced the health secretary to put the hospital trust into special measures. This Trust is no longer trusted to run itself and is now being overseen by NHS Improvement. It is reportedly the first time a Trust has been placed in this position without a recommendation from the care Quality commission first of all.

A landmark ruling in the case of Darnley V Croydon Health Services NHS Trust has been made in the Supreme Court. The case involved Mr Darnley, who attended at A&E following a head injury. Mr Darnley was advised by the reception staff that the wait would be five hours and as a result decided to return home.

On the 21st January 2018 at 5pm, Jake Stanley aged 3 years old was taken to Whiston Hospital in Merseyside following a seizure that he had at home. Whilst travelling to the hospital, Jake suffered another seizure and was attached to a ventilator a short time later. Jake had stopped fitting at this time. A staff nurse had prepared an injection of undiluted phenytoin (anti-seizure medication) whilst Dr Thomas Whitby was out of the room, failing to label it.

You may have seen the highly reported matter in the media relating to Gosport Hospital. In brief, an independent panel have undertaken an investigation in relation to treatment at Gosport War Memorial Hospital and have found that there was a disregard for human life for a large number of patients between 1989-2000. It has been found that 456 lives were shortened by inappropriate and dangerous levels of painkillers being prescribed and that, taking into account records which are missing, a further 200 patients may also have been affected.

Throughout the course of the week we have run a series of blogs focusing on child safety and how it can be enhanced. Risks to children exist in everyday life whether that be by way of accident, injury, exposure to content in social media or other online resource or more targeted harm in the form of physical or sexual violence.

We have also taken part in Hats for Headway today, raising awareness and funds for Headway. As we have discussed in our recent blogs, suffering from a brain injury can have devastating effects on the individuals’ life together with their families. Headway’s campaign has highlighted success stories on how important support and awareness is. It is also Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day today where Spinal Injury Association, Aspire, Back Up, Spinal Research, and Spinal Injuries Scotland all come together to raise the profile of spinal injury and the devastation this can have on the injured and the people around them.

Rehabilitation is key from the outset and is likely to be an ongoing aspect in any survivors life. Not only does this assist and support the individual who has suffered the brain injury but it also helps those around them to be involved with their continuing care after brain injury. It allows those supporting the injured to seek respite when carers, physiotherapists, and other therapists are working with their loved one and helps them to cope with any remaining disabilities.
