Start your career at Ramsdens

At Ramsdens we firmly believe our people are our greatest asset and this is reflected in the time and care we invest in our Trainees, we are passionate about their development offering a supportive, collaborative and inclusive culture.

So it should come as no surprise to learn that we look to attract and retain the best candidates for our Training Contracts. We expect candidates to have ambition, drive and motivation for their own career and for the future of Ramsdens and our culture allows Trainees to turn passions into careers, which is one of the reasons our lawyers remain with us for such a long time.

Whilst we place emphasis on a strong academic background (requiring three A-Levels BBB+ together with a minimum 2:1 and have completed LPC on commencement of the Training Contract (or equivalent), we firmly believe that our Trainees need to have more to offer than good grades.

We expect a positive “can do” attitude, commercial awareness along with a real passion for law, and a determination to succeed.

Over the two years our Trainees experience four seats from the following departments: Child Care, Clinical/Medical Negligence, Commercial Property, Corporate, Court of Protection, Employment, Family, Litigation, Personal Injury, Private Client and Residential Conveyancing.

Trainees are involved in client matters straight away, with constant support and supervision guiding them through. A review process has been designed to provide valuable feedback on progress, with a view to maximising everyone’s performance and allowing Trainees to take ownership of their own development.

We encourage networking and have plenty of opportunities to represent the firm at careers’ events, participate in events at local schools, colleges and universities as well as attending social events.

My first six months of my Training Contract at Ramsdens Solicitors has been a very rewarding. Having worked in the Private Client department (an area where I had very little experience), I was given a lot of hands-on experience from my supervisor which allowed me to learn this area of law quickly. I have learnt new practical skills such as how to correctly draft a Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Inheritance Tax Forms, as well as gaining personal skills such as how to conduct client meetings by myself to take instructions. I was given a lot of responsibility throughout the six months, but also received very thorough training and help from my supervisor.

Ramsdens are an excellent firm to be a Trainee with as they are supportive and very forward-thinking. Having offices all over Yorkshire, there is a wide variety of departments that you can train in, and they take into account your preferences when deciding which seat you will work in next. I am looking forward to starting my next seat in Conveyancing and furthering my career with this firm!

In my first seat in Court of Protection, I gained hands-on practical experience as I was given responsibility to manage a case load and the opportunity to have lots of client contact (whether that be face to face or remotely through the use of Zoom!). It has been interesting to transition into my second seat in Family, working within a new team, new office and learning a new area of law, but I am privileged to work in a friendly firm that are always on hand to help. The great thing about being a Trainee at Ramsdens is that you are given the tools to build your own network, whether that be by attending events, or making connections through your job role. I am fortunate to be learning from some of the leading legal minds in their respective areas and look forward to the next 18 months!

I started out in the Leeds office where I was a part of the Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Abuse team and was pleased to start off in this department as I enjoyed Medical Law and Civil Litigation at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I was given a great amount of responsibility at the outset and the opportunity to develop my litigious skills by communicating with Defendants and observing Counsel in various settings. Furthermore, I gained experience working on a variety of cases including road traffic accidents, accidents at work, misdiagnoses, claims arising from physical / sexual abuse at both pre and mid-litigation stages. Whilst working with the team, I was part of Joint Settlement Meetings resulting in six figure settlements for our clients, involved in drafting detailed Witness Statements, Schedules of Loss and much more.

I can genuinely say I have loved every minute of being a Trainee at Ramsdens so far. I am able to attend a variety of networking events and given the chance to attend careers fairs to promote the Ramsdens name and also aide my own professional development. My favourite thing about working at Ramsdens is the people, everyone has been there to support me in my journey, and it is safe to say I have made life-long friends in the process!

After my 6 months with Private Family, I feel that I was given the opportunity to step up and take on extra responsibility. As well as assisting the head of department on divorce and finance matters, I also had conduct of my own Non-Molestation Order files. Due to the fast-paced and urgent nature of such applications, I felt that I became not only more organised but more confident. I conducted my own hearings which helped develop my advocacy skills, skills which I hope to take further as I progress through my new seat in Care.

During this seat, I also observed the approach taken by my senior colleagues to handle high-conflict situations and have, as a result, learnt invaluable communication skills with both clients and other parties involved. In addition to case work, I was also involved in the business development of the department and enjoyed building and maintaining relationships with other local organisations who work with similar clients to Ramsdens. This is a skill which I hope to develop throughout my Training Contract as my professional network expands.

The main aspect I enjoy about being a Trainee at Ramsdens is that experience is the priority; if there is something I haven’t yet been exposed to, my colleagues will certainly get me involved where they can and take the time to thoroughly explain the task / scenario at hand!

As a Trainee at Ramsdens I have enjoyed the excellent balance of support and individual responsibility that I have been given by the firm. This has enabled me to develop my legal skills and build a professional network.
I was attracted to the Training Contract at Ramsdens due to the connections that the firm has to the local community and it has been brilliant to have the opportunity to support charity groups alongside my legal work during my first six months.

My first seat in Litigation has been a fantastic experience in a fast paced but rewarding environment. I have had the opportunity to work with a great team on a variety of tasks which have helped me to develop as a Trainee. Working in the Litigation department has exposed me to many interesting areas of law, from Employment to Commercial Litigation, since my first day. There has been invaluable learning from Partners who have involved me in matters concerning both court proceedings and alternative dispute resolution.
Some particular highlights during my time in Litigation have been sitting behind Counsel in a four-day remote Employment Tribunal hearing and participating in a mediation which resulted in a favourable settlement for our client. Securing a positive outcome for the client is a brilliant feeling and is something that attracted me to pursue a legal career.

I have also enjoyed the opportunities for client contact and this has helped to develop my communication and drafting skills. As the department deals with a wide range of cases I have certainly learnt that it is important to expect the unexpected in Litigation.
