Many people dream of owning a listing property: the idea of living in a home with such a long heritage – that has been certified by the state as representing a part of British history which needs to be preserved for future generations – it’s all incredibly romantic, and for those lucky enough to be able to acquire such properties invariably do so with a great deal of pride. Moreover, on the whole listed properties tend to keep their value better than other homes and are more immune to market fluctuations.

This month is National Road Victim Month, a time to remember those killed or seriously injured on our roads. The immediate aftermath of a serious collision is, for all concerned, a time of shock. Others who have been in the vehicle but perhaps sustained lesser injuries and family members are attempting to process the information provided by the authorities that a loved one has passed or sustained life changing injuries. Any individuals who were at the collision scene will also have witnessed traumatic events. The Police have specialist Liaison Officers who will explain what is known regarding the collision at that time and the process of investigation to follow.

In 12 months to the end of March 2017, there were 1.9 million adults in England and Wales, between 16 and 59 years old who reported domestic abuse. The Office of National Statistics tells us that this equates to 1.2 million survivors being female and 0.7 million survivors are male. Even though domestic abuse occurs in all genders, there is still a disproportionate number who are female and the Government recognises that the most severe forms of domestic abuse is perpetrated against females. v

The Supreme Court in the case of Morris-Garner v One Step (Support) Limited has clarified the approach to awarding damages against parties who deliberately breach their obligations under a contract.

​Monday the 30th July 2018 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Human trafficking is a crime that exploits men, children and women of all ages for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. Sadly, this takes place in every country in the world. It is estimated that 21 million people are victims of trafficking around the globe. One third of these people are children.

A recent decision of the General Court of the European Union has highlighted the need to ensure that victims of harassment are not prevented by an employer from disclosing unlawful acts. In SQ –v- European Investment Bank, on 1 April 2008 the Bank hired SQ as an employee in an administrative role. Following the arrival of a new director in October 2014 the department in which she worked was restructured. Two years later she complained that the behaviour of the new director towards her constituted psychological harassment. The allegations included claims that he had belittled her, spoken to her inappropriately and treated her unfavourably in relation to others. The Bank upheld her complaint in part and requested the new director to apologise, but also informed the employee that the procedure was to remain strictly confidential, including within the Bank.
