Earlier this month, 21 people were prosecuted for their involvement in the largest ever child sex abuse case. The case, investigated by West Midlands Police, involved seven children, all of whom were 12 years old or younger.

Concerns were raised following a hospital visit by one of the child victims. It has subsequently transpired that the abuse spanned nearly a decade, and has been described by Deputy Chief Superintendent Paul Drover as “some of the most shocking abuse that I’ve seen in my career”. Some of the victims are now adults, and are described by West Midlands Police as having suffered “significant physical and mental harm”.

Due to the number of offenders, West Midlands Police conducted over 70 suspect interviews and 3 criminal trials took place over 15 months. Those prosecuted faced a variety of charges spanning from child cruelty offences to child sex abuse. The biggest sentence given was a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years and a lifetime sexual harm prevention order after being found guilty of 20 child sexual abuse related offences.
