Matthew is a Trainee Apprentice Solicitor currently sat within our Real Estate Department. He is based at the firm’s Halifax office.

In February 2022, Matthew joined Ramsdens as a Legal Assistant in our Child Law department. He started his training contract in September 2023 and remained in the Child Law Department before moving to the Private Wealth and Succession department in March 2025. Throughout this experience Matthew has gained, he has dealt with various clients including parents to private companies and can tailor the advice appropriately respective to his client. Matthew is currently studying his SQE at BPP University with a view to qualifying in 2026.

Being a member of the Ramsdens Ramblers, Matthew enjoys hiking and took part in the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge in 2023. He enjoys playing sports such as football and tennis. In his spare time he is also learning German.

 

What are your career highlights so far?

“Highlights of my career so far, include representing parent clients in Child Law proceedings and in Public Law Outline proceedings. I was advocated for my clients to obtain the best possible results for them. I also assisted on complex childcare cases, which include concerns such as non-accidental injuries and a high profile factitious illness case. This was one of the first cases to be involved in the family court transparency pilot in Leeds.”

What is one legal myth that you’d like to dispel?

“I’m the father of the child so I must have parental responsibility” – Unlike the mother, father’s do not have an automatic right to parental responsibility.

 

What made you want to work in your sector?

“I have always been interested in the academia of law and got involved in debating and mooting at University. I quickly learnt that I also wanted to work in a role which made me help make a different in people’s lives. By working within the Child Law department, I am dealing with very sensitive but important matters within people’s lives and I help provide legal advice to assist in their endeavours to have children remain or returned to their care.”
