Biography And Reviews
Jake is a Trainee Solicitor, currently in his third seat in our Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence department. He is based at the firm’s Leeds office.
In his current seat, Jake’s day to day tasks generally include preparing witness statements, schedule of losses, letter of claims against Defendants, advice on quantum and taking new enquiry calls for both Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence claims. His previous seats were within our Child Law department at our York office and our Corporate & Commercial Department at Edgerton, Head Office.
Prior to commencing his legal career, Jake received a Distinction in his LPC and a Distinction in his Masters, which specialised and analysed the Laws on Surrogacy in the UK. He has a keen interest in legal research, particularly case law. He is of the belief that where there is a will, there is a way, and he particularly abides by this mantra when researching case law to support a client’s claim.
Jake has previously worked as a Paralegal and Senior Paralegal in firms specialising in Litigation, Criminal Defence, Aviation, Divorce and Family. Throughout his work experience, he has been afforded great opportunities to collaboratively work on high net-worth and pertinent cases. This has allowed him to develop and excel his legal drafting, organisation and attention to detail.
Throughout his legal experience, Jake has been involved in ultra-high value and complex cases, where he has had the responsibility in drafting settlement brochures, briefs to counsels, schedule of losses, advice on quantum, and court applications.
The reason Jake loves his job at Ramsdens Solicitors is because he is able to work in a fast-paced and high intensity environment. No day is the same, and this keeps him mentally stimulated.
Outside of work, Jake is passionate about cooking, and he uses this as a form of relaxation after a long day at work. He also enjoys going to the gym, and spending time with his family and friends; mainly trying out new local restaurants in the city.
What is one legal myth that you’d love to dispel?
“That to be a successful lawyer, you must be from a rich, privately educated background and must have received the best GCSE and A-Level results.”
What are your career highlights so far?
“Firstly, being able to represent clients at their initial police station interview, as this was, I would say, my real first experience getting to grips of what it entails to be a lawyer and represent clients. It was both daunting and exhilarating, and it really developed my skills in interacting with clients and synthesising disclosure. This was also an ample opportunity in developing my communication, critical-legal-thinking and interview skills too.
Secondly, being actively involved in a case concerning Financial Remedy Proceedings, where the total available assets were in excess of £100 million. This was the highest value case I have worked on, and I was fortunate enough to assist in preparing the client’s Form E. This really developed my attention to detail.”
What made you want to work in your role/ law?
“My Mum was actually the one who said I should study law, as she said I always play devil’s advocate and I love to argue! I guess that was enough for me, and here I am now commencing my Training Contract at Ramsdens.
I have spent over 4 years studying law and working in practice for just over 3 years. I can now say that the reason I love working in my role and law in general is because no day is the same. I really enjoy working in a fast paced/high intensity workplace, where there are tight deadlines to abide to. For me personally, I find it is where I thrive best, and I really love to have that client interaction. It is also being able to help people in some of their most trying times, which is very rewarding.”
