What is collaborative family law?
At Ramsdens, we are committed to pursuing collaborative family law wherever possible, as it offers a personal and effective way to resolve disputes. Unlike mediation or court proceedings, it allows couples to settle differences through face-to-face discussions with their solicitors’ support, involving relevant third parties where necessary.
Key benefits:
- Control: couples set the pace and agenda of discussions
- Support: both parties’ solicitors are present throughout negotiations, to ensure the whole family’s needs are met by working together as a team
- Full disclosure: both parties must provide honest information, focusing on facts rather than disputes
Expert involvement
The process allows for various experts, such as financial advisers and counsellors, to assist in identifying priorities and achieving effective agreements.
Especially effective for families
Collaborative family law is particularly beneficial for families with children. It promotes open and respectful communication, reducing stress and enabling parents to reach long-term agreements that work for everyone.
At Ramsdens, our team of compassionate and expert family lawyers includes three collaboratively trained lawyers, Sarah Ward, Claire Rutter, and Rebecca Sargent.
Why is collaborative family law becoming more popular?
- Control: all key decisions about your future are made jointly by you both, not a third party
- Positive impact on children: if children are involved, this process shows them that you are working together, helping them cope better
- Cost and time efficiency: collaborative family law can significantly reduce the time and cost compared to contested court proceedings
- Maintained contact: by maintaining contact with your ex-partner, you have a better chance of understanding each other and finding the best possible solution
