Notary public services
Need a document notarised? We have a Notary Public located in our Huddersfield office. She offers notarial services to both businesses and individuals.
While our notary is physically located within Ramsdens Solicitors and is also employed by the firm as solicitors, her notarial services are independent. She operates as a self-employed individual, separate from Ramsdens Solicitors.
What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a specially qualified lawyer who is regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Notaries serve as an impartial witness in a variety of official acts, connected with the signing and authentication of important documents.
What does a notary do?
A notary provides authentication and execution services assist in the recognition and legal validity of documents in other countries.
Typical examples of work carried out by notaries include:
- Authenticating documentation needed for emigration and applications for marriage abroad
- Notarising copies of passports and educational qualifications
- Certifying the identity of a company or its officers for private or public sector bodies or regulators abroad
- Notarising the due execution of documentation in relation to the purchase of land or other assets abroad
- Notarising copies of company documents
- Notarising powers of attorney relating to the conduct of business, property transactions or Court proceedings abroad
Identification
In most cases, the notary will require you to provide a form of proof of both your identity and address, such as:
- A passport
- A driving licence
- A birth certificate
- A recent hard-copy utility bill, bank statement or similar
Further certification
Some countries may require further certification of documents. This typically involves an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or legalisation by the relevant embassy or consulate of the destination country.
Legalisation does not automatically form part of the notary’s handling of a document but, whilst the notary recommends that clients handle this process themselves, where possible, she can assist where asked to do so for an additional fee and upon payment of the relevant expenses.
Important information
Please note that in any event, the Notary Public’s responsibility in acting on your behalf is limited to the notarial formalities and appropriate incidentals connected to the documents in question, unless specifically instructed by you to draft or advise on any documentation, subject to the notary being provided with adequate instructions and time to carry out the transaction.
All work that is carried out is carried out pursuant to the individual notary’s terms and conditions, details of which can be obtained on request.
The notary can provide an indication of the likely cost of the work you require upon enquiry. An overview of fees and charges can also be found here.
