In a bid to crack down on sham, illegal marriages, couples must now give almost double the notice of intention to wed. This is a rise from 15 to 28 days comes into force today, which was approved by Parliament last year.

It is a legal requirement that each party in a proposed marriage or civil partnership gives their notice prior to the ceremony / formation taking place.

The Government has made clear that they will not tolerate illegal marriages as a form of access to a right to live in the United Kingdom. Registrars have been encouraged to be extra vigilant and report any suspicions that they may have to the relevant agencies.
