As we continue to support Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, our Abuse team explains how they may be able to assist survivors.

What is the Criminal Injuries and Compensation Authority (CICA)?

The CICA is a government scheme which awards compensation to blameless survivors of violent crimes and sexual abuse. In 2020/2021, despite pressures faced by COVID-19, the scheme paid out £153 million in compensation.

Am I eligible?

There are some rules over who can apply but essentially, CICA is open to survivors of violent crime, or people whose loved ones have died as a result of a violent crime.

By the time of making your application, the incident must have been under 2 years ago, or reported to the Police under 2 years ago. Applications therefore need to be made within a reasonable time.

To support a successful application the matter should have been reported to the police as a crime reference number is required. Additionally, evidence is required to support your application therefore GP, Hospital and/or Police records are usually submitted alongside your application.
