Domestic Violence calls increase by a third in West Yorkshire following the Euros

West Yorkshire Police have reported an increase in Domestic Abuse call outs. The calls reporting domestic abuse increased by 33% following England’s first match in the Euro 2016 tournament.

Detective Superintendent Darren Minton of West Yorkshire Police’s Safeguarding Central Governance Unit

“So far, the number of reported domestic abuse related incidents has shown that there has been a rise when England has been playing and I would like to reiterate our message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and a moment’s madness towards a partner during the drama of the football can lead to a lifetime of consequences.“

The facts and figures speak for themselves. Alcohol and anger as a result of a football game result in significant numbers of (mainly) women experiencing domestic abuse. This is unacceptable. If you find yourself a victim of domestic abuse – please seek help.

1. In any emergency always dial 999. It is extremely important that you secure the safety of yourself and your children from the perpetrator of domestic violence.

2. Help is available 24 hours a day from Domestic Violence and Women’s refuge charities such as the Domestic Violence helpline – call 0808 2000 247. For men suffering from domestic violence contact http://www.mensadviceline.org.uk/ 0808 801 0327

3. At your earliest opportunity, contact a solicitor. We can secure a Non-Molestation Order injunction which prevents the perpetrator of domestic violence from contacting you.
