“Every three minutes a person in the UK will develop dementia.” - Alzheimer’s Society

Dementia Action Week (previously Dementia Awareness Week) takes place from 21st - 27th May and the Alzheimer’s Society are calling on everyone to take action, whether it is only a small action, it can have a big impact. This is to help improve the everyday lives of people affected by dementia and create a dementia friendly UK.

Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. This week we are showing our support for the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week.

What is dementia?

  • Dementia is not a normal part of the ageing process. It occurs when the brain is affected by a disease. Dementia affects individuals differently, such as problems with memory, thinking, concentration, language, visuospatial skills and orientation. Dementia can also impact a person’s mood, emotions and their behaviour.
  • Dementia is progressive. This means that a person’s symptoms will get worse over time. However, many people still live many happy, fulfilling years for many years after their initial diagnosis of dementia.
  • Most people develop dementia over the age of 65 but dementia can also affect younger people, with more than 42,000 people in the UK under 65 with dementia.

At Ramsdens we are members of Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield’s Dementia Action Alliance. A number of our staff members are proud to be Dementia Friends Champions and the majority of our staff are Dementia Friends.

On a daily basis, our Private Client department see the impact of dementia on our clients and their families. We pride ourselves on being dementia friendly and strive to provide as much support as possible during such a difficult time for the individuals involved.

We are also alive to the stark reality that dementia can affect anyone and, sadly, until a cure is found it is vitally important that individuals get their legal affairs in order whilst they have the capacity to do so.

This week, we will be releasing a series of blog posts about the social and legal issues surrounding dementia and what we can do to help you.

If you are concerned about the legal issues surrounding dementia and would like some advice call us on 01484 821 500, text LAW to 67777 or email willsandprobate@ramsdens.co.uk.
