There's been a visible increase in the divorce rates among men and women over the age of 65 over the past ten years. On the other side of the spectrum, there has been a 46 per cent increase in those over 65 marrying or re-marrying.

Why?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently released a report in which they said that older people are "more connected, economically and socially, than they were before." The report also considered that people over 65 are "more likely than ever to be working and therefore able to support themselves outside of marriage."

Additionally, those over 65 are living longer. With another twenty or so years to look forward to in the future people are perhaps more likely to consider what they want for their future.

The ONS also questioned whether the popularity of online dating amongst older people has perhaps offered a new opportunity for people to meet someone new!

Clearly, the increase in divorce and the increase in marriage and remarriage in those over the age of 65 demonstrates the steady change and development of society and the modern view of marriage. It will be interesting to see how the statistics develop over the next decade!
